On Imagination
by Mary Ruefle

"Why a chapbook by a poet? Aren't you a scientist?" Yes, but imagination is a crucial important human ability. Without it, we can't relive past events or envision the future; we can't imagine another life. Ruefle's beautiful little book reminds us that imagination can also be destructive, as when one imagines that the CIA is bugging their dinner salad. Like most amazing powers, it is neither good nor evil by itself, yet it is used pervasively in our daily lives.
