Ideology and Utopia: An Introduction to the Sociology of Knowledge
by Karl Mannheim

Karl Mannheim's Ideology and Utopia opened a whole field of study to me, the sociology of knowledge, which is central to my research and teaching. The book is a sophisticated and provocative analysis of how everyone's beliefs, even the sociologist's own, are products of the social contexts in which they are created. Mannheim challenges us to investigate how our visions of a better life are structured by our current social experiences, and how our capacities to critically analyze knowledge emerge within historically-changing structures of society.
