I am honored to call Katherine Bomer both a friend and a mentor. I chose this book because the overall message is about how we view students' writing, with implications for the development of their identities as writers. Rather than searching for what is wrong, she argues the need to read student writing with openness and possibility -- "eager to envision what is there." This text has influenced me as a teacher, a teacher educator, and researcher.
