Savage Inequalities: Children in America's Schools
by Jonathan Kozol

I was first assigned to read this book as an undergraduate student. At the time, I had no idea the profound effect it would have on me. It was this book that ignited my passion for social work. I came away from this book stunned, shocked, and disheartened by the inequalities that exist in our schools across the nation. None of this sat well with me - I knew that I had to do something to address these injustices. This book ultimately led me down the path I am on now - examining and addressing inequalities in schools and specifically addressing the mental health needs of at-risk children and adolescents. I hope that anyone who reads this book is confronted, as I was, with the desire to critically think about these issues and that maybe, just maybe, it will ignite your passion like it did mine!
