We have received some questions related to the Jackson Library renovation’s impact on the west lawn of the Elliott University Center, otherwise known as Kaplan Commons, as well as the Walker Avenue traffic circle area. Here are some commonly asked questions as well as responses. If you have additional questions, please contact rcsander@uncg.edu or send us a direct message via Instagram or Facebook.

What is the fenced-off area on the Kaplan Commons being used for?

This area serves as parking for members of construction crews. Due to already limited parking options for students, faculty, and staff, this was chosen as the area of least disruption for parking operations on campus. The area has been fenced off since before the beginning of the Jackson Library renovation; it was used during previous, unrelated campus infrastructure projects.

Why aren’t buses running to Walker Circle during the renovation?

Trucks and equipment are frequently coming in and out of the renovation construction zone, which is located on the edge of the Walker Avenue traffic circle. For reasons related to safety and efficiency, the decision was made to move bus stops out of this area for the time being.

Will Kaplan Commons return to its original state?

Yes, though the timeline for the removal of the fenced-off area will depend on the date of completion of construction and is yet to be determined.

Will Walker Circle still be a traffic circle once the renovation is complete?

Yes. The timeline for this will be determined in a similar manner to the timeline mentioned in the previous question.
