Michael Crumpton has retired from his position as Dean of the University Libraries after more than eighteen years of employment with UNCG in various administrative positions. In addition to his work with the University Libraries, Mike has also taught courses for UNCG’s Information, Library, and Research Services Department. During his time with the University, Mike accomplished a great deal, but his accomplishments beyond the scope of UNCG are also impressive. Mike has authored or edited/co-edited multiple monographs, served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Learning Spaces since 2015, written dozens of articles and columns for various library publications, contributed chapters to many different books, and presented at countless conferences and events. His record of service to the library profession is also impressive, and from 2017 to 2019 he was the President of the North Carolina Library Association. Mike is involved in professional organizations at the local, state, national, and international levels, and it is no exaggeration to say that he has made a major impact on the field of librarianship.
Below are statements from many of Mike’s colleagues and collaborators reflecting on his contributions and achievements.
Alan Boyette, UNCG Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor: “Dean Crumpton has left a legacy of collaboration and forward-thinking leadership that will continue to benefit the Libraries for years to come. As he concludes his service as Dean, we thank him for the many ways in which he strengthened the Libraries as a center of scholarship, connection, and discovery.”
Emily Britt, UNCG Libraries Development Officer: “I haven’t worked with Mike long, a little over a year, and I will continue to be in awe of his dedication to the University Libraries at UNCG. Mike has been a ‘Dream Dean’ for me as I learned about academic libraries and librarianship. His thoughtfulness, patience, and humility are character traits I will always remember and strive to carry forward.”
Kathryn Crowe, retired UNCG Libraries Associate Dean for Public Services: “Mike was a breath of fresh air when he arrived at the UNCG Libraries. His background in retail brought excellent experience to our business and facility operations. He oversaw many successful building projects that improved services to our students, faculty, and staff, not the least of which is spearheading the major renovation happening now! Congratulations on a well-deserved retirement.”
Breanne Crumpton, Appalachian State University Humanities Librarian & Associate Professor: “Mike has dedicated his career to advocating for the future of our profession through both his vision as a leader and his consideration as an educator.”
Joel Ferdon, Public Records Officer, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools: “I have known Mike Crumpton for the past eleven years and in that time he has been a teacher, mentor, and, above all else, an indelible friend who has brought so much sage advice to every professional situation that I have had crop up. Always encouraging, Mike is a ray of steadfastness and positivity. His laugh was always infectious and was heard at every meeting I was ever in with him. There are few others who can match his dedication to being a public servant, both to his institution and to his state association, NCLA. For Mike, he always put others before himself, building folks up and giving them all the tools necessary to be successful. In my case, being the always hard-headed, Mike would give soft suggestions and musings that I would always meditate on. Was he always right? Absolutely. Did I ever feel as if he was patronizing or lecturing? Never! That is the mark of a true leader—a genuinely good and dedicated individual whose legacy is immense. I wish him the absolute best in retirement! Thank you for changing my life and always being there for me! With much love and admiration, -Joel”
Jennifer Hanft, Head of Content & Information Delivery, Library of North Carolina: “Mike has been a joy to know and work with throughout my time involved with NCLA. Between working with him on the Executive Board and the Leadership Institute planning committee, I’ve learned so much from him—not the least of which has been how to pay it forward in the profession. His leadership, guidance, and enthusiastic collaboration have always been an inspiration, and I wish him all the best in his well-deserved retirement!”
Libby Stone, North Carolina Association Past President: “There is so much to say about Mike I am not sure if I can express it. He has been a mentor to me since he was president of NCCCLA and director at Wake Tech CC. That must have been close to 20 years ago. I don’t believe I would have served as president without his leadership. He has mentored so many librarians over the years and changed the Leadership Institute. His vision made LI sustainable as he intended and such an excellent program. I will be forever grateful to Mike for his mentorship and for his friendship. Wish him all the best in his well deserved retirement!”
