With the beginning of the new academic year, there are often questions about access to books, both physical and electronic. We wanted to share some reminders about the best ways to get access to these resources.

Print Books

More than 180,000 print books remain available on UNCG’s campus. Most of Jackson Library’s print book collection is currently in off-site storage and cannot be accessed. The print collection will return after the tower side of the library has been renovated. In the meantime, there are many different ways of getting access to print books:

  1. Consider visiting other libraries to borrow materials. UNCG users have borrowing privileges (print books only) at all UNC system schools as well as most colleges and universities in the Triad area. UNCG users should be sure to bring their SpartanCards and nine digit ID numbers when visiting other college libraries.
  2. Interlibrary Loan is a convenient option for many print needs. This system allows users to borrow materials from other institutions around the world. Keep in mind that the UNCG Libraries do not control the speed at which loan requests are fulfilled by other institutions, nor do we have control over the amount of time loans from other institutions can be kept.
  3. UNCG students, faculty, and staff who live in Guilford County are eligible to apply for a Greensboro Public Library card at any branch. On campus residents can show their SpartanCard. Off campus residents can show a photo ID with their current address or a photo ID and something that has their current address such as a check book or piece of mail.

The Harold Schiffman Music Library’s entire print collection remains available.

E-Books

The UNCG University Libraries provide access to more than 1.5 million e-books through our website. In most cases, searching for the title of the book using the library catalog (red box) and clicking “View eBook” will provide access. An example is provided below.

A library catalog listing for a book called A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini.

If users experience any difficulties with the library catalog, we recommend clicking on the blue chat icon in the lower right corner. This will connect patrons with a library employee who can provide real-time assistance.

Keep in mind that, due to publisher restrictions beyond our control, some e-book licenses only allow for a limited number of users to view the title at a time. If an e-book is being used for a specific course, students are advised to read in advance and to close browser tabs after they are finished with an e-book title in order to allow others to access the book.

For assistance with questions about books, either print or electronic, please feel free to contact the UNCG University Libraries.
