Request a Search for Missing Library Materials
This service is available to all library patrons. When items with the status of “Available” in the catalog cannot be found on the shelves, ask at the Checkout Desk for assistance. The staff at the desk will:
- Verify the call number, location, and availability of the item.
- If time allows, check to see if the item is waiting to be shelved and recheck the shelving location.
- Offer a Search Request card to initiate a search for the missing item.
While Available items are not eligible for Interlibrary Loan, UNCG students, faculty, and staff not wanting to wait for the search process can borrow from other area and UNC libraries using their UNCG ID Card. Ask for help at the Checkout Desk if you need assistance with this service.
Most missing items are searched at least once per week for up to six weeks. During this search process the item’s status in the catalog is changed to “Missing,” after which UNCG students, faculty and staff can place Interlibrary Loan requests.
When found, these items are placed on hold at the Checkout Desk for the requesting patron. Stacks items are held for 7 days; DVDs for 3 days. Requesting patrons are notified via email. If no email address is available, they may be notified by the U.S. mail or telephone.
In the event that items are not found, requesting patrons are notified at the end of the search process. All items which cannot be located are considered for re-order.
