Building citations in APA Style

For each item in your list of works cited, you need three pieces of information:

  • author
  • title
  • publication information

Remember that it's very important for you to record this information for each item that you use in your research so that when the time comes you have what you need to assemble your list of works cited!

The next section of the tutorial will take you through the steps of building a citation.

Citing in APA Style - Exercises

In these exercises, you will be asked to build a citation from an example of a published work.

There are two examples:

  • a book
  • an article from a scholarly journal

For each example you will build the citation by:

  • looking at the illustration and
  • filling in the blank with the information for each element of the citation.

You must enter each element in correct APA style. The APA rules for each element will be given, as well as examples to show you what each one should look like.

When you enter the information correctly, you will advance to the next element. Your completed citation will appear at the bottom of the page.

So let's try the first example: citing a book in APA style.
