Abstract
Robert T. Davis seeks compensation for the murder of his slave named Sandy. Davis charges that, in July 1856, James C. Knox pursued his slave with arms and dogs, “without any legal authority, cause or provocation,” and killed him. Davis therefore seeks compensation for the value of his slave, which he assesses at $2,500. Davis estimates Sandy to be forty years of age at the time of his death; related documents however reveal that Sandy may have been fifty or sixty years of age.
