Petition #20884503

Abstract

Amos Adams represents that, on the 6th of March 1841, he legally purchased a fifty-year-old male slave named Liverpool from one John Dunbar. Liverpool remained with him until he was seized by the parish sheriff, Henry W. Fowler, and advertised for sale. According to Adams, Liverpool was seized on a court order obtained in a suit entitled "Bank of Louisiana versus Sarah J. Jewell." Adams claims that no mortgage was placed on the slave when he purchased him and the seizure is illegal, inasmuch as the bank failed to notify him of its intention and the sheriff failed to have the slave appraised prior to advertising him for cash sale. Adams is therefore suing Fowler, the Bank of Louisiana, and John Dunbar. He seeks an injunction to stop the sale of the slave and wants damages in the sum of $100.
