Abstract
On 23 March 1853, "Yellow Sam a free negroe of Colour" charged that he was unlawfully seized and taken into custody by William and James Weddington and others. Sam asserts "that he is a free man being manumitted by his deceased master James Sloan." Sam asks the court "to grant him a writ of habeas corpus" and to release him from the defendants' custody.
Result: Granted; appealed; dismissed.
