- Salutation: To the Honourable the Judge of the Fayette Circuit Court in Chancery sitting
Abstract
Phoebe Gillis, a woman of color, states "that she is a free woman and has for a long time been most unjustly held in bondage." Asserting that "she was born free," Gillis claims that Esther Morrison and Henry Clay have deprived her of her freedom. Noting that "she is poor and unable to pay the expenses of a suit," Phoebe asks that she "may have proper answers, subpoenas" and that she be provided "such full and perfect relief" to which she is entitled.
