Jacob Dell alleges that Western B. Thomas is indebted to him for $140, plus interest. Thomas is the guardian of Rhoderick Dent, a free man of color. In 1830, Dent signed a promissory note in that amount for the hire of a slave named Peter; Dent, however, has failed to pay said sum. The petitioner asserts that "by means wherof and by force of the statute in such case made & provided the said defendant then & there became liable." Jacob Dell seeks relief.
