Petition #20681917

Abstract

Paul H. Wilkins sues William Ward for slander. Wilkins claims that he was an esteemed member of his community and "a humane master in the treatment to his slaves." Ward, however, publicly accused Wilkins of half-clothing and half-starving his slaves, as well as beating them severely and maiming them. Ward claims that one of Wilkins's slaves was so exposed to inclement weather that his feet were frost-bitten and that he was deprived of the use of one of his toes. Wilkins contends that he has been "greatly injured in his said good name, fame and credit, and brought into public scandal" by Ward's allegations. He claims that he "has sustained damage to the value of five thousand dollars." He asks that Ward appear in the next Superior Court to answer the allegations.
