- Salutation: To the Honble the Judges of the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia In Chancery Sitting
Abstract
Caroline Butler, "formerly called Caroline Bell," claims to be a free person of color. She complains that Fielder Magruder, as administrator to the estate of Susan G. Beall, has claimed her as a slave and has directed Horatio Maryman to seize her and carry her into Maryland. She informs the court that she has been "going at large as free for thirty years." Butler states that she has filed her petition for freedom and seeks an injunction to prevent Magruder and Maryman from selling her as a slave beyond the jurisdiction of the court.
