Petition #10384304

Abstract

Fifty-one free persons of color seek the repeal of an act "entitled an Act to prevent the use of fire arms by free negroes and free mulattoes and for other purposes passed at Dover February 10 1832." They purport that "the third and fourth Section of that Act has operated very much against the free people of colour in worshipping their Creator according to the dictates of their consciences." Furthermore, some of the petitioners have been unjustly charged with violations of the law and forced to appear in court. They "humble pray a Repeal of the third and fourth Section of that Act or Such Relief as may appear equitable to your honorable bodies."
