Allen Sims, executor of the will of deceased slave owner William Betsell, asks the court to establish the will as a valid instrument for the distribution of property. A related document reveals that Allen Sims was back in court several years later to declare that, "owing to the fact of the emancipation of the slaves belonging to the estate of said Betsell and by reason of the losses thereto during the war," the estate is now insolvent.
