Francis M. Gilmer, the uncle of forty-two-year-old Montgomery resident Nicholas M. Gilmer, asks the court to declare his nephew insane. Gilmer owns a 1,600-acre pine tree plantation on the Red River, Caddo Parish, Louisiana; he also owns twenty-one slaves (one of whom recently died). According to his uncle, Gilmer is unbalanced and "has become dangerous to the community."
