Abstract

Verlinda Perry's slave, Jarrett, was charged, tried, and convicted of "circulating or causing to be circulated a certain writing denying the right of Masters to property in their slaves and inculcating the duty of resistance," the slave Jarrett or Gerrard was transported and sold "beyond the Limits of the United States." Perry submitted a claim to the state for $800, the value of her slave, as is customary "in all cases of slaves condemned to be hung or condemned to death," but through an omission she as not yet been compensated.
