Fifty-four residents of Bedford County petition on behalf of Thomas Sawyers, a Massachusetts man, who was found guilty of stealing two slaves and sentenced to imprisonment for "near or about five years." The petitioners defend him on the ground that he had been "misguided by some of those with whom he unfortunately fell in" and ask that he be released from the remainder of his sentence.
