Petition #11683301

Abstract

One hundred eighty-two Norfolk residents write that despite efforts to rid the state of free blacks, their numbers are "rapidly increasing." And they lament: "What then is to be done"? Answering their own question, they say "they verily believe Providence has provided a remedy in the Society for Colonizing them in Africa." The General Assembly should provide annual appropriations to aid in transporting "that indigent, ignorant and wretched people to the land of their ancestors." They contend that it is out "consideration of Patriotism, duty, interest, and benevolence" that they "beseech your honorable body to dispense from an overflowing treasury" the required funds to support their recommendation.
