Petition #11584701

Abstract

When free woman of color Nancy Flournoy moved to Texas from Louisiana, she was "not aware until she arrived here that the laws of the state did not sanction her remaining here." She states that she now finds herself "liable to be dealt with according to their provisions and notwithstanding her good disposition thereof, she is liable on the shortest notice to be compelled to leave or be sold as a slave." Flournoy therefore requests permission for herself and her twenty-year-old son, Thomas Jefferson Flournoy, "who is in the same predicament," to remain in Texas.
