In June 1831, Johns and Mahlon Hopkins obtained a writ of fieri facias against James and Stephen Keech. The sheriff of Saint Mary's County sent a deputy to seize their property. William Keech complains that the deputy seized a slave named Mary, whom William Keech claims as his "bona fide property." Keech asks for an injunction to stop the proceedings until his claim is settled. He also petitions the court to return the slave to him and to subpoena the Hopkinses to answer his charges.
