Petition #20984402

Abstract

Caleb Ogleton, a free person of color, states that he is being confined in a Frederick County jail as a slave. He states that he was freeborn in the District of Columbia and can provide a duly authenticated certificate of his freedom. He explains that he has been serving "as a hireling on board of a canal boat" that travels between "Knoxville Frederick County & George Town (DC)." Besides, he claims that "being engaged in navigating the canal" does not violate an 1831 statute forbidding people of color to remain for more than ten consecutive days in the county. He "prays to be discharged from prison by order of this honorable Court."
