Petition #20186127

Abstract

Margaret Merritt, who is seeking a divorce from her husband Albert Merritt, explains that N. D. Johnson, her husband's agent, took her slaves to Georgia to sell them. One of the slaves, however, got away and returned. Johnson was not able to sell the remaining slaves for the asking price of three thousand dollars, and brought them back to Talladega. Margaret not only asks for a return of her slave property, but seeks alimony. Her husband, she asserts, owns "four likely slaves" and land worth more than three thousand dollars.
