Petition #11382902

Abstract

John Inabnet recounts that in January 1829 he "hired to the superintendant of public works Mr Whitner a number of negroes to work on the State road from Providence." Inabnet insists that "it was contrary to the agreement" to have "the hands hired by your petitioner" worked on the lower section of the road. He states that "about august after the negroes were hired one of your petitioner's was killed by another of the road hands who was hired to work on the upper section of road." Noting that he consented for the hiring "because he saw the public necessity of this mile of road being repaired as it was almost impassable," the petitioner "respectfully solicit your honorable body to consider the claims of your petitioner to some compensation for said negro."
