Opportunities for Volunteers

Before we can proceed to digitizing and transcribing the deeds, we have to find them! Volunteers are currently involved in indexing slave deeds. Indexing involves searching through the deed books online for documents that mention slaves and recording the information in each document in a Google spreadsheet. This process of discovery can be an exciting one, and is the biggest way that volunteers can currently contribute to the project.

Getting Started

Once you have registered, the volunteer coordinator will send you a sample set of deeds to index. Complete these and email them back to volunteer coordinator. The volunteer coordinator will provide you with helpful feedback and suggestions, and a link to your first 50 pages of deeds so you can get started. The pace you work at is entirely up to you. Once you have finished with the first 50 deeds, let the coordinator know and she will send you another 50.
