Many UNC Greensboro professors choose to bring their students to the library for instruction in research basics, citation, source evaluation, searching, and much more. For decades, staff and faculty working at the UNCG University Libraries have facilitated these visits (and continue to do so during the current renovation!). An area of improvement that many library employees are looking forward to enjoying relates to the spaces in which these visits are hosted. At the time of the tower’s closure in December of 2024, there were two computer labs for librarians to use when working with classes. These spaces were in high demand and saw a great deal of traffic. In 2024 alone, 119 sessions were held in the two labs with a total of 1,741 students in attendance! This is in addition to all of the University Libraries sessions that take place in additional campus classrooms and labs, archival instruction in the Hodges Reading Room, and online sessions that are regularly facilitated by librarians. Needless to say, there is a great deal of demand for high-quality teaching space in order to maximize student experiences.
To this end, the renovation project includes plans for completely new classroom spaces. One of the spaces will include fixed furniture and 48 desktop computers, while the second will include moveable furniture and (optional) laptops for class use. The second classroom can also be divided in half, creating a possible third room as needed depending on requests. Each room will have wall-mounted room scheduling display systems and state-of-the projectors. The rendering below gives blog readers an idea of what these spaces will look like. Keep in mind that chair, wall, and table colors may differ in the final renovated space.
