In a thoughtful decision of a longtime UNC Greensboro benefactor, the Jackson family has graciously released the naming from Jackson Library. With the support of the UNCG Board of Trustees, the family’s decision, offered freely and with deep affection for UNCG, reflects an extraordinary commitment to the growth and evolution of our University Libraries. Their generosity opens the door for us to imagine new possibilities and to expand the library in ways that will serve generations of Spartans to come.

As part of this transition, the space will move forward under a new name: the Main Library. Even with the name change, Walter Clinton Jackson’s legacy will continue to be honored in a prominent and meaningful way. The second floor of the renovated Main Library will be named in recognition of Dr. Jackson’s lasting contributions to UNCG. This designation ensures that future generations of students, faculty, staff, and visitors will remain connected to his leadership, vision, and enduring commitment to education and learning.

Walter Clinton Jackson joined the State Normal and Industrial College in 1909 as a professor and later became head of the Department of History. In 1934, he was appointed the third Chief Executive of the College and would serve as chancellor for the next 16 years. Jackson was president of the North Carolina Conference for Social Service (1925–26) and of the Southern Commission on Interracial Cooperation (1928–32). For many years he was a member of the board of trustees of Bennett College and at times the chairman. In 1949, Bennett awarded him the doctor of humane letters degree for being “a pioneer in the field of better race relations.” In February 1960, the Library Building was renamed the Walter Clinton Jackson Library in recognition of his dedication to the school.

This moment arrives at a time of great momentum for the University Libraries. With ongoing progress toward the reimagining of our spaces and services, the search for a new Dean, and the transformational renovation, we are preparing to meet the needs of a changing academic landscape. The Jackson family’s offer strengthens that momentum and reminds us of the partnerships that make our work possible.

We see with the tower renovations a new symbol of learning and research which expands our future possibilities. We are deeply grateful for the Jackson family’s trust, generosity, and unwavering belief in UNCG’s future.
