POPLINE provides access to carefully selected health and associated natural sciences literature.
POPLINE contains a comprehensive collection of health and associated literature. An international resource, POPLINE helps anyone gain access to scientific articles and book chapters. POPLINE is a resource providing full-text documents from scans acquired at cost from libraries worldwide.
History
For over 45 years, POPLINE has provided access to the world’s population, family planning and related public health literature to diverse clients worldwide with a primary intended audience in developing countries.
Established in 1973, the database was part of the 'Population Information Program' (PIP). During 1980-2001, POPLINE was one of the National Library of Medicine’s databases, serving as a complement to the broader PubMed database. In 2001, POPLINE developed its own searchable website and, in the same year, became part of the 'Information and Knowledge for Optimal Health' (INFO) project, and later the 'Knowledge for Health Project' (K4Health). During that time, POPLINE has delivered nearly 500,000 full-text documents to requesters in low- and middle-income countries.
Scope and Content
After the abrupt removal of database, site and associated services in 2019, this is an attempt to recreate this knowledgebase. While over 85,000 database records could be directly recovered, the database currently contains over 380,000 records. This project is ongoing work and not to be completed anytime soon.
Products and Services
POPLINE's website consists of bibliographic citations and abstracts to a variety of printed materials including journal articles and book chapters. The majority of items were published from 1970; however, there are selected citations dating back to the 19th century. Many documents are unique to POPLINE and are unavailable elsewhere except as hardcopies in some libraries.

We usually receive library-scanned documents within one workday. Under exceptional circumstances, delivery may take up to 3 workdays.
POPLINE delivers documents by email from [email protected] in PDF-format and with OCR in the native language of the document applied.
Prices
Our regular price for library-scanned articles or chapters is US$29.90. For many articles that we can directly access electronically at our supplying libraries, we charge US$19.90.
For students from less-developed countries, we provide articles at a subsidized cost of US$9.90. Please email us ([email protected]) using your institutional address for availing this offer.
