Fifty-five residents of Fayetteville support the application of Daniel and Mary Sutherland to the General Assembly "for an act of emancipation" for Thomas, the property of said Sutherlands. The petitioners avow that said Thomas "justly maintains the reputation of an honest & faithful Servant" and that he has been "an exemplary member" of the Methodist Episcopal church of Fayetteville "for a number of years."
