Petition #20881001

Abstract

James Hogan avers that in December 1809 he agreed to act as overseer for John Duly. By the agreement, Duly was to provide ten slaves to work the crops of corn and cotton; he also consented to provide for the slaves' maintenance. Hogan agreed to oversee the plantation for one year at the rate of $400. However, Hogan claims, he had only worked at the plantation for a little over a month when "Duly took all the slaves off the said plantation out of the possession of your petitioner and has since disposed of the said slaves." Hogan claims that Duly is planning to move out of the territory without paying Hogan for his services. Hogan prays that Duly be decreed to pay him the agreed upon sum plus damages.
