Abstract
Free man of color Joseph Nelson asks for an exemption from the law forcing free black people to leave the state. He came to Mississippi as a child in 1835 and has lived in Hinds County ever since. He has a wife and children who are slaves belonging to Judge A. Dabney of the town of Raymond.
