Petition #20681905

Abstract

Edward Shrewsbury claims to be the owner of Melia and her three children, Lucy, Sam and Marian, valued at $3,000, collectively. He contends that he "casually lost" the slaves, who came into the possession of William L. Pope "by finding." Shrewsbury alleges that Pope knew that the slaves belonged to him, but he has refused to return them. Shrewsbury asks that Pope "answer your petitioner in an action of detinue." A related deposition reveals that in 1817, Shrewsbury had stated that the collected value of the four slaves was $1,100.
