Petition #10379403

Abstract

In 1780, Maryland resident Sarah Frisby hired five of her slaves--Ben, Cuff, Stephen, Betty, and Kate--to Richard Lavin of Maryland; Frisby later moved to Delaware, where she currently resides. The petitioner explains that the law passed in 1787 renders "it unlawful to bring slaves into this State and [entitles] them in such case to their liberty." Of the opinion that "she would be able to render the condition of the said slaves more comfortable to them & more profitable to herself were she allowed to bring them into this State," she asks that she be exempted from said law.
