James Riddle asks to export and sell his slave, William Jones, who has been prosecuted but not convicted of "a Highway Robbery." Riddle tried to reform Jones but discovered it was not possible; shortly after he put him on his farm "to ascertain if he could be reclaimed," Riddle discovered that Jones had stolen a considerable amount of property from one of the neighbors. Citing community pressure for the removal of Jones, the petitioner prays that he be granted "a permit or License to export sell or carry out for sale from this State into the State of Maryland or Virginia the aforesaid negro slave William Jones."
