In 1839, John S. Edwards wrote his will, bequeathing to his wife Juliet "one negro man by the name of sam & one negro girl by the name of Mary her increase excepted" as well as his stock of horses, cattle, hogs, and his sixty-acre plantation. At her death, he stipulated that the property should to be equally divided among his children. Following Edwards's death, Juliet married a man named Henry Shrader who took possession of the property except for Mary who had died. When Juliet died, the heirs complain that Shrader surrendered Sam but has "refused to deliver the remainder of said property." They pray that the court will require him to provide compensation.
