Petition #20184711

Abstract

In 1847, John Darrington, executor of the estate of William Matheson, deceased, asks to sell personal property to pay debts amounting to ten thousand dollars. In a related petition, one of the heirs of the late Matheson sued Darrington for mismanaging the estate, failing to apply the profits from slave labor to the benefit of the heirs, and using the excuse of the estate insolvency to pay for his own debts. We learn that the late Matheson had been a wealthy man, possessed of land and slaves, and involved in many farm related endeavors, among which the felling of timber for the construction of steamboats, and the production of sugar and cotton.
