General Petition Information

Abstract:Jacob Sampson, a free man of color, represents that "he has Kept a house of private entertainment for the last fourteen or fifteen years in the County of Goochland." He now explains that he has been summoned "to appear at the next Court and shew cause why his license should not be revoked." Averring that "his house has been a great convenience to those who carry stock to market as well as other travellers," Sampson asserts that "he has in no instance violated the law in respect to houses of private entertainment & can produce the strongest evidence to establish his character for honesty and good behaviour." The petitioner therefore prays that "your Honble Body will pass a special law authorising him to keep a house of private entertainment upon the payment of the tax thereon & using good behaviour."
