Sussex County jailer William Briggs asks to be compensated for expenses incurred in keeping for several months in his jail a runaway slave named Major Henry. Briggs incarcerated Major Henry on 3 November 1841, at which time the slave was appraised at $75; he sold him at auction, the following August, for only $25. Briggs says this did not cover his expenses.
