Petition #11683003

Abstract

Thirty-six citizens of Fauquier County "regard the residence of a free black population among us as highly injurious, and deprecate its increase as an intolerable burthen." The petitioners perceive "the existing laws on this subject to be inadequate." They do believe, however, the "plan of African colonization presents a cheap, certain and humane remedy" to this "growing evil." With the act passed 4 March 1833 about to expire, the petitioners "respectfully and earnestly pray that it may be renewed, and so modified as to make the appropriation more liberal, place it more immediately under the controul of the State Colonization Society, and apply its benefits to all free persons of colour, born and residing within this Commonwealth, who consent to be transported to Africa."

Result: Referred to committee on finances.
