Robert Trout represents to the legislature that, after more than fifty years as a slave, he was allowed by his owner to purchase his own time and has thus accumulated by "Industry and Good economy," to procure his freedom and buy property. Although he is prepared to abide by the laws of Virginia that require him to leave the state, he asks for an additional year of residency to dispose of his property.
