General Petition Information

Abstract:As prosecutor for the Commonwealth of Virginia in the county of Henrico, George William Smith has attended fifty-nine sessions of court beginning in September "upon the trials of negroes or Slaves charged with conspiracy and insurrection." He has also attended five or six trials of people charged with other felonies, for which he has been fairly compensated at a rate fixed by the county court. However, Smith contends, it is "unreasonable and unjust" that the county of Henrico "should contribute more than its proportion, in common with all the other counties of the commonwealth, toward defraying the expenses consequent" incurred in trying slave disturbances. He asks the court to "allow him such compensation for his services in the fifty-nine called courts before mentioned."
