Petition #11678304

Abstract

Eager to become a resident of Virginia, Henry Martin, of Tortola Island, “has lately made a purchase of a considerable landed Estate in the neighbourhood of the City of Williamsburg.” He now seeks to import slaves, but discovered that a law prohibits the importation of slaves "from any place or places whatsoever." Martin avers that "the necessity of Slaves in this Country for the purpose of Agriculture and of Domestic Ecconomy is too obvious to require farther demonstration." He therefore prays that "he may at least be allowed to import any numbers not exceeding twelve negroes for domestic purposes."

Result: Granted if also import twelve laborers/mechanic.
