The Sumner County Colonization Society recommends the removal of free black people to Africa. They state that free people of color "are excluded from the ordinary means of education, on the ground of prejudices, which are quite natural, and which will probably never be removed" and that "the benefits of government" cannot be extended to them. In addition, they represent that "their intercourse and association with certain classes of our white population, is calculated to produce, and does produce, ... serious evils to the country. But the preceeding considerations are light, and trivial, when compared with the injury sustained by the slave holder, from this class of persons."
