Dennis Anthony, a thirty-seven-year-old black man, states "that he is unjustly claimed held and detained in slavery" by Joseph G. Hays, administrator of the late James L. Higgins's estate. Anthony is currently in jail and fears that Hays will sell "him into slavery, and perhaps to some person who will export him to the south." Anthony asks that he be released from jail, discharged from servitude and set free.
