Petition #21383407

Abstract

Emma Drayton wishes to sell certain slaves, whom she inherited from her late father, Thomas Drayton. Drayton notes that, by his last will and testament, he bequeathed to her "a Share of the Rest and residue of his personal Estate," including slaves. She reveals, however, that "the Negroes so bequeathed unto your Petioner are field hands and as yr Petioner has not the ability to employ them in the cultivation of Land They are unproductive to her." She asks the court for permission to sell the slaves "and to vest the proceeds of said Sale in other property more productive unto yr Petitioner."
