General Petition Information

Abstract:Emily and Betsy, along with the latter's two children, Spicy and Edmund, are suing for their freedom. Emily and Betsy are the children of Levi Jones, a free black man, and Sally Ann, a slave of John Bennet. They assert that said Jones purchased Emily and Betsy "upon the express consideration that said Emily and Betsy were to be free whenever they should attain the age of twenty one years as likewise all their children born before that time." They inform the court that they have been levied upon for the debts of said Jones and that "they are about to be sold to satisfy said judgments." They therefore pray that the defendants be restrained "from proceeding further towards the sale of your orators ... and upon a final hearing may said injunction be perpetuated and your orators declared to be free."
