General Petition Information
| Abstract: | George Hunter, a slave, seeks an injunction against William Offutt, Zaduck Offutt and Thomas Triplett "commanding them and each of them that they do not in any manner molest or impede your Orator in his said petition, by removing your Orator from the said County." Hunter states that he became entitled to his freedom when he was transported by the William Offutt from Virginia into Maryland in violation of an act of the Maryland Assembly prohibiting the transportation of slaves. Hunter has a petition for his freedom pending in circuit court. He alleges that the defendants have "devised many treacherous plans," including a "pretended bill of Sale," to deny him his freedom. |
